Leviticus - Chapter 19

Bible Study Notes

Leviticus 19:1-8 The Lord instructed the people to be holy, because God is holy. They shall revere their parents to honor them, keep the Sabbaths, nor make idols. The Lord reminds them again that when they offer peace offerings to do it correctly so it will be accepted. If not, they shall be cut off from the people.

Leviticus 19:9-18 The Lord instructed the people to leave some of their crops behind when they harvest for the poor and the sojourner. The Lord reminds them not to steal and not to be deceitful. They shall not oppress their neighbors or rob them. A hired laborer must be paid for his day’s work by the end of the day. They shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind. They shall fear the Lord! They shall be honest when called upon in court for a trial. They shall not slander people or hate them in their hearts. They shall not take vengeance into their own hands or hold grudges against the sons of their own people, but shalt love the neighbor as they love themselves.

Leviticus 19:19 The Lord instructed them to not let their cattle breed with a different kind, sow their field with two kinds of seeds, or wear a garment made of two kinds of material.

Notes: Two different kinds of domesticated animals are not to be crossbred, and two types of cloth are not to be woven together. Ceremonial holiness requires that things stay in their proper sphere, just as Israel must observe its separation from the nations.

Leviticus 19:23-25 The Lord instructed them to not eat the fruit from a freshly planted tree until the fifth year. Year one through three they just let it fall and rot to the ground. Year found that shall offer it to the Lord.

Notes: They could not eat from the fruit trees of Canaan for four years after entering the land because the fruit of the first three years was to be considered unclean, and the fourth year the fruit was to be offered to the Lord. Some gardeners say preventing a tree from bearing fruit in the first years, by cutting off the blossoms, makes it more productive.

Leviticus 19:26-28 The Lord instructed them to not eat meat with the blood in it. They shall not practice divination. They shall not shave their heads or beards in weird designs. They shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves.

Leviticus 19:29-37 The Lord instructed them to not make their daughters prostitutes. They are to keep the Sabbaths and reverence the sanctuary. They are not to console mediums, necromancers, or sorcerers that divine the future. They shall honor the aged person. They shall do no wrong to a sojourner. They are to be loved as they love themselves. They shall do no wrong when judging people. They shall have fair measuring systems in place and not cheat the people.
