Leviticus 12:1-5 A woman is considered unclean for seven days after having a male child. The male child shall be circumcised on the 8th day. The woman shall continue for 33 days in her purification process where she can’t touch anything holy, come near the sanctuary during this time. If she bears a female child, she shall be unclean for 14 days and continue for 66 days in her purification process.
Notes: The loss of blood signifies that one is incomplete and unclean. Why is the woman unclean twice as long for giving birth to a female child? Possibly because Eve was deceived first in the Garden of Eden causing her to sin first.
Leviticus 12:6-8 At the end of the purification process, the woman shall bring a 1 year old lamb as a burnt offering, a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, and offer it to make atonement for herself. Then she shall be clean. If she can’t afford a lamb, then she shall bring 2 turtledoves or 2 pigeons.
Notes: the sacrifices required were to impress upon the mind of the parent the reality of original sin and that the child had inherited a sin nature.
