Exodus 40:1-8 The Lord commanded Moses to set up the tabernacle on the 1st day of the 1st month, put inside all the objects that belong inside along with the veil and screens. The altar of burnt offering shall be placed before the door the tabernacle, then the Bronze Basin between the Tabernacle and the Altar of Burnt Offering. Lastly, the court shall be set up and the screens hung for the gate.
Exodus 40:9-11 The Lord commanded Moses to anoint with the anointing oil the tabernacle and all that is in it to consecrate them to make them holy. Moses shall anoint the altar of burnt offering along with its utensils to make it holy. Moses shall anoint the basin and its stand to make it holy.
Exodus 40:12-15 The Lord commanded Moses to wash Aaron and his sons before the entrance of the tabernacle. Moses then put on Aaron’s holy garments. Moses then anointed Aaron with the oil to consecrate him to make him fit to serve the Lord as His priest. Moses put the coats on Aaron’s sons, anointed them too so they can serve as priests. This anointing shall admit them to a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.
Notes: The Tabernacle was completed almost one year after the exodus from Egypt. The people were at the foot of Mount Sinai at that time, where the book of Leviticus was given in the first month of that second year. The record of Numbers begins with the people still at Mount Sinai in the second month of that second year after leaving Egypt
Exodus 40:16-33 Moses did all the Lord commanded him to do and so finished the work.
Exodus 40:34-38 The Lord then covered the tabernacle and filled it with His glory as a cloud. Moses could not enter the tabernacle once the Lord was present there (only the priests from now on). When the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, it was a sign for the people to pack up and continue their journey toward the Promised Land. The cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day and fire by night in the sight of all the children of Israel throughout their journeys.
Notes: The first time the cloud was taken up after the tabernacle was finished and erected was 50 days later.
